GERMAN LANGUAGE

NAME OF COURSE: GERMAN   LANGUAGE  COURSE  

To equip the student with communication skills, knowledge and values appropriate for effective communication in various fields of German language.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT
Faculty of Linguistic Admission & Registration requirements for Ordinary Diploma or high school certificate shall apply.  Student with a certificate in German shall have an added advantage.

COURSE STRUCTURE & DURATION
Faculty of Linguistic regulations will apply.

EXAMINATIONS REGULATIONS
Regulations governing the Faculty of Linguistic Examinations conduct shall apply or International Examination.

LEVEL TWO IN GERMAN LANGUAGE AND  DURATION IS FOUR  MONTHS

DIALOGUE IN GERMAN  
Conversational  and  communication skills – participation in simple dialogue, drills in spoken German  , making requests, reasons explanation,  Conversation on shopping, sports, professions and handicrafts, diseases, accidents and remedies, furniture & household items, sizes & properties of bodies, virtues & vices, with the shopkeeper, at the hospital, etc

GERMAN  COMPOSITION
A theoretical survey of various ways to writing compositions, Guided composition, joining simple words & phrases to make sentences and paragraphs, rearranging sentences and expressions to form dialogue completion of statements

GERMAN  TRANSLATION
Problems of translation (structural & cultural) from one language to another, word for word translation, and figurative translation, simple exercises in translation of short sentences & paragraphs, translating proverbs and wise sayings.

LEVEL THREE IN GERMAN  LANGUAGE & DURATION IS FOUR  MONTHS

ADVANCED GRAMMAR
The declinable and Indeclinable condition, conjugation, derived forms of the trilateral verb, syntactic styles in German, nouns of pre-eminence and degrees of comparison, Adjectives assilimilated to the active participle, Augmented and Unaugmented verbs.

ADVANCED COMPOSITION
Various ways of letter-writing (both official and personal) summary of selected texts, forms of German   Prose – writing academic papers, speeches, advertisements, short stories & events, public announcements, notices and occasional greetings & messages. Oral versus Written Communication, good writing style in written communication, principles of written Communication. overcoming barriers to Effective Written Communication, writing Organization. Writing Style. Making an Argument .Paraphrase and Summary versus Plagiarism


ADVANCED GERMAN   TRANSLATION
Written professional translation of various selected passages of different subjects and interests – translating excerpts from speeches, newspapers, religious books, official documents (constitutions & log books etc) messages principles of verbal communication language can be an obstacle to communication, emphasis strategies ,Improving Verbal Communication

ADVANCED SKILLS IN GERMAN  
Reading skills – reading unvowelled materials, reading German   newspapers & magazines, writing skills-various hand-writings in German, listening skills – dictation and audio skills, German   parsing and diminutive styles.
